When will the 'penny drop' on climate change?
The inaction of the Rudd
Government on climate change will once again be under challenge,
this time on Friday June 5, World Environment Day
From 12 noon, members and
supporters of the Climate Emergency Action Network (CLEAN) will
stage a sit-in at the Carrington St office of the Minister for
Climate Change, Senator Penny Wong.
At the sit-in CLEAN members
will endeavour to present a “Climate Emergency Declaration” to
Senator Wong and request her to endorse it. While access is not
guaranteed, the hope is that the office will not be “conveniently
closed “, as was the case on a previous occasion.
CLEAN spokesperson John Rice
commented, “The government doesn't truly appreciate the urgency of
dealing with runaway climate change. There are clear solutions
available through renewable energy technology. Building and
maintaining that technology will be a generator of many new jobs. We
can see this, but they can't. Obviously, the penny hasn't dropped
for them.”
Senator Wong will also be
invited to read out the “Climate Emergency Declaration” at the
“National Climate Emergency Rally” being held on Saturday June 13 at
Victoria Square.
Mr Rice says “We've saved a
spot for her on the podium, she only has to show up.”
